When Bethany Mota talks about her besties, she means all 6 million of them. Like, can you even imagine? And then beyond managing that seriously large social calendar, she has a fashion line with Aeropostale, a tour bus with her face on it, and mags (like us!) taking her picture. But this kind of superstar doesn’t happen overnight. She uploaded her first video 4 years ago and has been working just as hard ever since. And now? She’s still just the totally real, naturally quirky, Spongebob-loving Bethers that so luckily put herself on YouTube back in the day.
Here’s how she did it, and how staying true to exactly who you are while working hard can really make things happen for you, too!
1. She built confidence over time
Bethany’s vids may look super profesh now, but the YouTube sensation didn’t have a fancy camera or mega confidence in front of the camera when she first started. Before she had cool tech gear and solid lighting, Bethany would sneak her parents’ old-school camcorder into her room and stack it on top of books to balance it, so she could create her first vlogs. She didn’t want her parents or sis to hear her recording (major big sister teasing ammo), so she would whisper into the camera! She did it for herself first, and then made sure her fam knew about her skills!
2. She still works just as hard
Despite all of her new projects, Bethany still edits, plans, and creates every video herself—just like she did back then! She revealed that it can take her 2-3 days sometimes just to edit one video, and between getting all the supplies, actually making the projects or putting on the beauty and fashion looks, and then burying herself in tech, that time adds up!
4. She never let haters stand in her way.
It’s hard to imagine, but Beth has dealt with cyberbullying, too. Even though she’s had mean things happen to her on the Internet, Bethany says, it’s also brought her happiness and support. Talking to other girls about what they got at the mall or how they did their makeup and making videos of her own, helped distract from the haters.
3. She does it because she loves it
Even though it takes time, her channel and talking to all her viewers is still her #1 true love. She said her dad keeps telling her that he’s amazed she made a career out of YouTube. But she tells him that it’s not a career and it’s weird to think about it like that. To her, it’s still just a hobby!
5. She’s totally real.
Bethany admitted she has Twitter TMI moments, too, like when she sliced her hand open because she wanted cheese and TWEETED while bleeding simultaneously. Because that also happens to us ALL. THE. TIME. We feel you Bethers. Just gotta tweet it out.
